Bernice started her life in the development sector some 22 years back as a Personal Assistant to a Relationship Manager at the then Urban Foundation. Oover the years she has attended and participated in many different Personal and Organisational Growth Development Programmes i.e. Organisational Development through Olive (now closed), attended courses with CDRA, Leadership Development for a 3 week period in New York as well as completing a Public Relations & Marketing Diploma through Damelin.

 

Worked as a fundraiser for an organisation in Early Childhood Development as a senior member of the organisation. Left this organisation in 1998 to head up a new organisation grounded within the Catholic Church and involved with poverty alleviation and training of lay people within the Church. Whilst involved with the Church organisation, seeds were already planted to start up Ikhala Trust as a community grant maker for grassroots organisations in the Eastern Cape. Founding Director since 2002.

 

Instrumental in initiating several key and important research and learning projects over the years and more specifically the recent work that has been completed with the University of Cape Town’s Graduate School of Business through the Community Grantmaking and Social Investment Programme under the leadership of Ms Susan Wilkinson-Maposa. The Demonstration is called “Measuring and Valuing Community Contributions”.

As a community grant maker, Ikhala Trust has supported more than 180 small organisations with more than R4 million plus a range of other goods in kind including office furniture, clothing, food, seeds for planting etc. Ikhala Trust has a full time staff of 2 people; a part-time general assistant, an associate who works on average 5 days a week and a team of 6 skills and resourceful Trustees who also provide pro-bono, a range of expertise to the organisation to complement the work of Ikhala Trust.
